I saw this last night but was too tired to reply.
I’ve been in a lot of conversations about AI elsewhere. Personally, I do not like how AI is getting used and marketed in general… I can see where this is all heading, I watched Terminator
However, I do not get upset by AI like some (quite rightly) seem to. Even though I don’t particularly like it, I can’t personally say “it sucks” because I think it’s actually very interesting to see/hear what humans have managed to get machines to do… this is SERIOUSLY “wow!” stuff, I think that’s missing in many AI conversations.
I don’t actually think it’s stealing, either. It’s just that a machine can learn to “rip off” The Beatles a lot faster than I managed to do! (where “rip off” = learn their techniques, chord changes, melodic foibles, and so on, to create new music).
… it’s just that I personally don’t want to listen to music generated entirely by a machine.
Or so I thought!!..
Sometimes, I’m fooled - and it turns out I can be emotionally moved by such art… my reaction to that is “oh well, who knew?” and “by the way, that’s amazing!!!”
On another site I’m on, there have been very entrenched views expressed very forcefully, and some truly creative people who would like to explore AI tools felt alienated and left the site, never to return. I nearly left because I could see how they were treated and responded to… I haven’t left yet, but I’m unlikely to post music there anymore.
On this site, we have some truly creative people who could possibly be in the same position as those hounded off the other site… I DO NOT WANT THAT TO HAPPEN HERE.
For this site, I’m with Sudara:
The bolded is SO important. I do not care if someone else wants to create using AI and post it. I’ll give it a listen, if I like it, I’ll say so… but if you create too much for me to get through, and the majority doesn’t move me, then I’m likely to stop listening or clicking on your stuff (which is what I’ve done to the example I think we’re talking about).
Personally, I’m more focussed on my stuff and what I’m creating, and if someone wants to listen to it, cool, if no-one does, then: whatever, I didn’t make it for them, I made it for me and anyone of like mind…
I’m not sure we need to or even should ban/block AI generated on here. If I was starting out now, instead of being in my 60s, I can see that using AI tools could be a VERY valid way of starting to create music. I know folks who can write songs but can’t sing… I know folks who can sing but can’t play anything… I kind of don’t see why they should be prevented from creating recordings of their songs. And if the “creative” bug bites them hard enough, they’ll want to learn how to do the element that they used AI for at the start.
Also, I know folks who use AI to generate stuff, then take the ideas generated, learn to play them and use them in their own creations. The finished thing was all played by a human… but the composer was, er, both the human… AND AI. Is this wrong? I don’t feel I have any right to judge this.
Also, I use EZdrummer’s “Band Mate” to suggest grooves and patterns based on my playing. Like it or not, that is AI (although I’ve come across folk who say it isn’t, I think they’re conning themselves).
Also, I use a Thesaurus and Rhyming dictionary while writing lyrics, I always have, I regard those as song-writing tools. Nowadays, the ones I use are all online… guess what? Fast pattern matching? … it’s AI.
AI is with us already, has been for YEARS (eg does anyone use a spell checker?), and AI isn’t going away.
I know when I create a thing… that’s what gives me the buzz. And if my created thing includes AI generated elements that seem to fit ok, faster than I can do it, then I’m happy to do that… BUT I would probably note in the blurb that that’s what I did (I’d actually be quite proud I’d managed it, I have NO idea how to do it at the moment
)
Yeah, I’ll follow this discussion with great interest. I may or may not have more to say, but I don’t want to get in any arguments, life’s too short…
But @sudara I’d like to say that I personally have been REALLY encouraged by your first post on this subject here
, you’re still running the same ship that made me go “omigod, this is where I want to post my stuff”
